Tucked away on an old, industrial ship‑lifting platform in Amsterdam‑Noord, Helling 7 sits literally on a “helling”. A former ship‐works slipway overlooking the water, ports and the industrial bustle of the IJ.
Steel beams, ship‑woody touches, huge windows framing cranes and harbour traffic, the terrace over looking the water and distant housing on the horizon. It has “summer long lunch by the water” written all over it.
We kicked off with phenomenal, woodfire-baked breadsticks. Crisp and charred on the outside, warm and moist on the inside. It was served with a broad‑bean dip that tasted like someone squeezed sunshine and soil together. Wow! So simple, yet so comforting and homey. Bam, you're instantly relaxed.
For main: the côte de boeuf with bone‑marrow and chipotle dip. A beast. A charred crust lingering with smoke, deep beefy flavour, the marrow melting like butter onto the steak and a the chipotle dip giving a smokey punch. De-li-cious.
The terrace is magic at dusk. Sit outside or choose a window‑table, watch the cranes, hear the harbor hum and watch the sun slowly make way for a horizon of lights dancing in the night.
