Rating: 5/5
Cuisine: French, Japanese influenced
Price: 4 course lunch €70, 6 course dinner €120
Jan van Dobben took over the kitchen, the restaurant, cooked the Michelin star and never let go. At Amarone, he cooks with the kind of composure that comes from years behind the pass. His wife, Yoshiko Takayama, commands the wine like a symphony. Together? Power duo.
It is exactly what you want from a michelin lunch or dinner. Precision dining. Flawless technique, yet effortlessly beautiful on the palate. The menu leans French at the root: sweatbread, chicken liver, sauces you want to wear. But there’s Japan in the detail: knife work, pickles, restraint. It’s a beautiful symphony.
Service is spotless. Precise without being stiff, deeply knowledgeable but never hovering. Crumbs gone before you notice. Wine? The pairing is Yoshiko’s playground. Burgundy, Jura.. there’s magic in every glass, but never a show.
Verdict: Amarone is a Rotterdam oasis, a delight. You settle in and forget time, therapeutic almost. Honestly, you could argue they are underpriced..
