From the sixth floor of Den Haag’s former KPN telephone central you step into Café Restaurant Flora and immediately the horizon opens.

Floor‑to‑ceiling glass frames sea, skyline and evening light. A terrace walkway loops around the space, and in the golden hour you can sip something crisp while watching the sun slide toward the water, all the way to Rotterdam on clear nights. Flora feels like a brilliant moment suspended in time. Enjoy it while you can.. Flora will close as soon as renovation of the building starts.

The food is exciting. Smart use of seasonal ingredients to create wonderfully flavourful food, highlighting the best that is available that time of year. E.g. pasta with fresh girolles, egg yolk and late summer truffles. Or: Cantabrian anchovies on romesco and sourdough. Just plain delicious. And there is always an option or two on the menu for the more adventorous amongst us. Like mussel linguine spiked by fermented peppers or tartare of beef and heart.

Verdict: Flora is one of Den Haag’s essentials: bold in flavor, generous in view, quietly urgent in its impermanence. Go now before all that remains is its memory..
